Telling change from noise
How do you know a change is real? We compare what a signal is doing now against what it has just been doing, rather than against a fixed number. It works the same way on a photograph as on a piece of music.
Making something belong
What makes a mark look like it is part of a scene instead of stuck on top of it. The light it borrows, the shadow it casts, and the direction the scene is already lit from.
Choosing what comes next
Picking the next step when it has to still make sense after the one that follows it. Finding a way through a collection the way someone would actually want to hear it.
